No doubt this critter won't be so mysterious to others. At first I thought it was a small dragonfly but its head looks like an ant's with little pincers that might be painful. Perhaps it's a wasp or flying ant although I've failed to find a matching photo on the Qld Museum site.
It was sitting in the same spot for about 45 minutes waving it's abdomen up and down so perhaps it was trying to attract a mate?
I find him/her interesting anyway; the white bit on the tail matches its white socks so maybe she's a trendy female...
OK already. I have examined the insect. Time for a new photo.
